Mornings in Jenin by Susan Abulhawa is a heart-wrenching, emotional read about the life of a Palestinian family from the 1940s until 2003, amidst the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The novel explores the loss of land, dignity and lives, with a strong message that violence only begets violence. The author's storytelling successfully explores believable and engaging characters and storylines, and gives readers a personal look at the cost of disassembling a nation. Though the book can be difficult to read with graphic detail of the treatment of refugees and the horrors of war, it is a necessary and beautiful telling of a multi-generational fiction which spans over 60 years of Palestinian history.
