Action & Adventure Editorial Review

Charley Varrick Charley Varrick is a classic forgotten film from the early 70s era that still manages to impress audiences today. Directed by Don Siegel and starring Walter Matthau, the film tells the story of a bank robber who accidentally steals millions instead of just thousands. As he realizes that something has gone terribly wrong, he finds himself in trouble with the wrong people and must come up with a scheme to get away. The film is well-directed and features a tight storyline that keeps viewers engaged throughout. Matthau shines in his role as the bank robber, delivering a convincing performance. Joe Don Baker also stands out as the formidable bad guy. The cast is excellent overall, and the story is well-written with a few surprises along the way. One reviewer mentions that they were initially drawn to the movie because it was filmed where they grew up, but found the story to be underwhelming, even fast-forwarding through most of it. However, this negative review seems to be an exception, as the majority of viewers highly recommend Charley Varrick. In addition to the film itself, the special edition BluRay release by Kino Lorber is highly praised. The transfer is beautiful with clear and clean audio. The inclusion of a feature-length making-of documentary is a standout feature, providing insights from interviews with the director's son, the screenwriter, and the cast, including Andrew Robinson. The documentary allows viewers to gain a better understanding of the director's vision and the process behind the film. Overall, Charley Varrick is a well-regarded film from the 70s that has stood the test of time. With an excellent cast, a tight story, and an impressive BluRay release, it is a must-watch for fans of the genre.
