Drama Editorial Review
Elle is a masterclass in subverting expectations. Isabelle Huppert delivers a stunning performance in a film that manages to be both contrived and true to life at the same time. The story starts out as a revenge fantasy but quickly evolves into a twisted tale of workplace drama, family dysfunction and sexual exploration. Fans of director Paul Verhoeven's work will recognize his penchant for perverse twists and taboo toppling, all of which are present here. Despite the extreme situations that all characters find themselves in, the film makes perfect sense on its own terms. Huppert's character seeks to dominate everyone around her, but a sexual assault puts her on a path of self-discovery and acceptance.
