While Brigitte Reimann was writing in her diary about the pain she suffered due to the tragedy of two Germanys in 1960, the Brothers had already begun to take shape in her mind: Families torn apart, siblings falling apart, what a literary theme! A year later he set about writing the novel. In 1960, when Reimann's own brother also emigrated to the West, the border between East and West Germany was closed. According to its main character, the young painter Elisabeth, the German Democratic Republic represents an egalitarian and victorious socialist future for its generation. His beloved older brother Uli decided to move to the West because he did not see any hope of development in the country. Or will there be a physical border and checkpoints between the two brothers, as well as a deep ideological disagreement? Reimann is outspoken when describing the course of life in the German Democratic Republic, the signs of corruption in the system that push citizens to leave the country, and Germany's tragedy from the inside. The novel, published in 1963, was widely discussed at that time and attracted the attention of young people, especially because it reflected the tensions they experienced.
