What Stands Out
Λεπτομέρειες προιόντος
- The War and the Iliad, which brings together Simone Weil, Rachel Bespaloff and Hermann Broch, is a work that deals with the issues of death and life through literature, religion and philosophy. Weil examines Homer's epic in detail, where he identifies a war machine that resembles nightmares. This article, which was first written in 1939, on the eve of World War 2, can also be read as a pacifist manifesto. Bespaloff wrote his article in the middle of World War 2, calling his work my way of dealing with war, but this article is also a response to Weil. In addition, Bespaloff's association of the Homeric epic with the Bible and the poets with the prophet is seen as a contribution in itself. The great German writer Broch puts an end to this debate by writing an epilogue in 1947, two years after the war ended. In this epilogue, he puts forward enlightening ideas about literary theory, from the old age style to the search for new myths in art to Kafka, whom he sees as close to mythical literature. On the one hand, it is the most tragic war epic written about 2700 years ago, and on the other hand, it is the greatest war the world was subjected to 80 years ago. Because our biggest problem remains current: Not losing our humanity. Show more
