İki ciltten oluşan, siyaset sosyolojisi ve siyaset bilimi araştırmalarının öncüsü kabul edilen bu eseriyle üne kavuştu. 1851'deki darbe sonrasında siyaseti tamamen bıraktı. Sonrasında Fransız Devrimi'ni hazırlayan koşullara ve Devrim'in başarısızlığının nedenlerine odaklandı.
